Boldt Residence

Santa Monica, California | 2005

This residence sits on a corner lot dominated by five mature, 45-feet tall Camphor trees along the street parkway. The house was designed to engage these trees: a central courtyard frames them, establishing and integrating their presence within as well as outside the house. All interior rooms face the yard so that the presence of nature is perpetual. Per the client’s request, a small portion of the existing house at the front of the property was preserved. The walls were saved but the pitched roof was inverted to a modern butterfly form.
