Johnson Residence

Palos Verdes, California | 2000

A large estate in Palos Verdes, this house was designed on the top of a rolling hill, posing a unique set of challenges. The aesthetic of the house was strictly regulated by the Design Review Board as “Ranch Style,” limiting material choices but allowing for modern explorations of the floor plan and grounds. A circular automobile drop-off area was added to deliver guests onto an elevated courtyard. A covered arcade was created to lead to the main entrance of the house on one end, the open hills and a horse stable on the other. The principal living and bedroom spaces were oriented to face the ocean with views to the north and west.
