Roberta Residence

Montecito Heights, California | 2013

The challenge with this small two-story house on a hillside was how to make the house feel larger. There was no yard space and the rooms were cramped. Space was created by converting three tiny bedrooms into two large ones. The front room was enlarged with a bay window and a balcony was added to the rear room leading to the yard. A 200 sf deck was added to the front of the house adjacent to the living spaces, which also provided breathing room. Additional windows and a skylight were installed to bring more natural light. The sum of these modest design elements transformed a small inward-facing house into a spacious outward-facing one.
