San Francisco
Civic Center

San Francisco, California | 1996

This project was a renovation of the California State Supreme Court building and the addition of an adjoining 14-story office tower. Preserving the classical Beaux Arts-style courthouse while accommodating the contemporary needs of 11 government agencies were primary concerns. Gradually stepping the massing upward to integrate the new structure gave it a strong civic presence. A hierarchical sequence of spaces links old and new buildings. Special attention was paid to entrances and atrium spaces to bring natural light deep into the building.
