Whatley Residence

Los Angeles, California | 2004

On a narrow lot, three building blocks shift positions to make way for an entry, central, and rear courtyard. These volumes are distinct independent forms but where they overlap is where the house becomes its most open and transparent. The floor level gently slopes downward from the entrance to the rear of the house (living room) to follow the natural grade of the site. The private rooms (bedrooms) are placed at the front of the property to allow the public rooms (living/dining/kitchen/study) to be adjacent to the exterior courtyards.
